“Getting to do research/learn math with Dr. Bosman is an experience I’ll never forget. Ever since I stepped foot in his Foundations of Advanced Math class, I can honestly say I have never once been bored listening to him speak about things I can only hope to grasp half as well as he does. While my love for math sparked at an early age, it never had the fuel to grow into the forest fire it is today until I was shown how beautiful this subject is: And I have Dr. Bosman to thank for that. I truly believe he could teach an ant calculus if he tried. I will cherish every story, every proof, and every tidbit of wisdom I gained from him. Thank you, Dr. Bosman!”
“My experience doing research under Dr. Bosman has been incredible. He was so supportive in every step of my research journey, not only through his knowledge and advice but also his encouragement and enthusiasm. He was always available in moments when I was stuck and every meeting with him felt like a step in the right direction. He works so hard at providing opportunities for his students to grow through attending conferences, preparing papers/presentations, and finding funding for trips and extra research experiences. You can see how he truly cares about his students and their success, not only in research, but in their future goals as well.”
“In the spring of my sophomore year at Andrews University, I was approached by Dr. Bosman about joining him and a group of students to do research over the summer. As a student trying to navigate the changes brought on by the pandemic, pursuing research wasn’t even something on my radar. I was also surprised that he thought I could study knot theory, something I was learning about in the Foundations of Advanced Mathematics. That summer, I had a great experience. While I wouldn’t have called myself a topologist at the end of the summer, I had grown and learned essential lessons for my professional development. I found and used my strengths in our project, learned from professionals Dr. Bosman connected us with whose professional paths had involved math, practiced research presentations, and knew the significance of doing research as someone interested in graduate education. As my graduation grew closer and I wrestled with the following steps I should take, Dr. Bosman empowered me to seek research opportunities at other institutions. Even after graduation, he allowed me to return and share my external research experience in biostatistics. While I am now in medical school,
many applied mathematical principles are used in medical research. Because of my first research experience with Dr. Bosman, I value and plan to continue pursuing academic research as a medical student and beyond.”
“I had the privilege of participating in an REU with Dr. Bosman and several of my colleagues during the summer of 2021. During this research experience, Dr. Bosman provided mentorship and guidance that was invaluable to my development as a student and mathematician. He was always available to answer questions and provide feedback on my work, which helped me develop my skills and confidence, and prepared me for my graduate studies. Furthermore, Dr. Bosman helped me develop my abilities in presentations and talks, a crucial skill for those in academia. Dr. Bosman deserves much credit for my academic success and the success of many others.”
