Biography

With over 20 years of experience, Dr. Romo-Cardenas has worked in academia and industry, including roles as a faculty member at UABC, CETYS University in Ensenada and Montemorelos University, and as an Optical Engineer at Goods & Services, where he contributed to product sustaining for BD Biosciences. Passionate about interdisciplinary research, he bridges optics, data analytics, and machine learning to solve biomedical challenges.
An active scholar, he has authored several peer reviewed publications and presented at international conferences. He is also dedicated to STEM education, having designed curricula and mentored students in biomedical optics and engineering.
Gerardo is married to Erika, who holds a PhD in environmental science. They have collaborated on several projects and publications, and they have a son. For recreation he enjoys running, biking, basketball and watching NFL games.

Current Research or Professional Activities

His research interests include:
• Biomedical spectroscopy: Advancing non-invasive glucose monitoring techniques.
• Light based biomedical applications: Investigating thermal effects for therapeutic applications, as well as biomedical image processing and photodynamic therapy.
• STEM education: Developing innovative teaching methods for engineering and optics.
Appointed National Researcher by the Mexican Science Council. He continues to collaborate on interdisciplinary projects, merging optical engineering with machine learning for biomedical innovations.
