HIRING INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS FOR JOBS AND INTERNSHIPS

Andrews University is ranked #1 in campus ethnic diversity and in the top 10 for for the highest percentage of international students! Supporting an international student in their experiential learning and further into full-time positions is possible!

International students are eligible to participate in internship and job opportunities through two programs: Curricular Practical Training (CPT) and Optional Practical Training (OPT).

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CPT AND OPT?

CPT may be authorized under certain circumstances for temporary employment, such as an internship or cooperative education (Co-Op) experience prior to graduation. Such an experience must be part of the student’s curriculum and can be paid or unpaid, part-time or full-time.

OPT is a program that temporarily allows international students with an F-1 visa (student visa) to work up to 12 months extendable up to 36 months) in the United States in relation to their major field of study. Students can participate in OPT either before or after graduation.

STEM STUDENTS AND OPT: Students who receive a degree in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields may be eligible for an additional 24-month extension of OPT. Students are able to verify their eligibility through our Office of International Student Services.

EMPLOYER RESPONSIBILITIES

The entire application process is completed by the student with coordination of our Office of International Student Services and faculty where applicable. Employers do not have to make contact with the US government during any of these programs. The only thing employers need to provide the student is:

  • A job offer letter, printed on official business letterhead and containing the following details:
  • Job title and brief job description
  • Exact dates of employment
  • Number of hours of work per week (e.g. 40 hour per week)
  • Physical place of employment
