Q: How long does it typically take to finish the MSCID program?

The MSCID program can be completed in as few as three semesters for highly motivated students without language barriers; however, most students finish in about two years to allow additional time for internships and research. Completion may take longer if prerequisite or ESL courses are required, or if the student is working full-time.

Q: Can I pursue the MSCID if I already have a master’s degree?

Yes. You may enroll in the MSCID program even if you already hold a master’s degree, including one earned from an international university.

Q: Can I pursue a second bachelor’s degree while enrolled in the MSCID program?

Students must have completed a bachelor’s degree to enroll in the MSCID program. If you plan to pursue a second bachelor’s degree at the same time, consult your financial advisor and academic advisor, as this may affect financial aid and enrollment.

Q: Is the program offered online?

Courses are available in-person and synchronous (some asynchronous). Some electives are not available online. For both synchronous and asynchronous courses, assignment deadlines are the same as for on-campus students.

Q: Can international students take online classes while in the U.S.?
  • International students in the U.S. must take the majority of their courses in person. They may take one online course per semester and must enroll in at least two in-person courses to maintain full-time status (8 credits).
  • If the student is outside the U.S., all courses may be taken online.
Q: Will my transcript show online vs. in-person study?

No.

Q: Will my transcript show if I repeated a course?

If you repeat a course, both attempts will appear on your transcript unless you request Graduate Records to remove the lower grade. For transcript-related questions, please contact Graduate Records.

Q: Are there prerequisites?

Yes—Research Methods or its equivalent must be completed within the first year.

Q: Can previously completed courses count toward the MSCID degree?

Possibly. Transfer credit is evaluated during the application review by Graduate Enrollment and the MSCID program.

Q: Can I get internship credit for prior experience?

No. Internship credit is awarded only when you are enrolled in the CIDS 680 Field Practicum and successfully complete all course requirements.

Q: Are internships provided?

No. Students arrange their own internships while enrolled in CIDS 680 Field Practicum with guidance from the academic advisor.

Q: Is there a study abroad component?

There is no formal study abroad option for this program. However, our study tour destinations are typically international, and you may complete your internship abroad.

Q: Does the MSCID program have concentrations?

No. We no longer offer concentrations. Instead we offer several elective courses. When choosing elective courses, we recommend you work with your advisor to find the right choices for you.

Q: Is there a graduate honors program?

Unfortunately no. Contact Honors Program with any questions.

Q: What program options are offered in Community & International Development?

Community & International Development offers the MSCID degree, dual-degree options, and certificate programs.

Q: How does social work differ from community and international development?

Social work requires licensing and focuses primarily on individuals, families, and local communities through counseling, direct services, resource coordination, and advocacy. Community and International Development does not require a license and emphasizes addressing broader social and economic challenges at the community, national, and global levels through advocacy, project management, policy, and program administration. The two fields complement each other, especially in disaster response and humanitarian settings, where meeting individual needs strengthens community recovery and development.
